Faces

I loved medium format. I miss it a great deal, shooting on a TLR with Tri-X. I loved it for portraits. But I can't afford a medium format digital...

So here, some square-format portraits in a Tri-X-ish style.

Ateraaby. Looks thoughtful, but he's that sort of person.

Can't remember her name, one of a series for another teacher, but you can't forget those eyes.

False Priest! Local man acting the naughty prelate at Saint Fraimbault.

Pete Sixsmith, 1970

Woman at Domfront Medieval. Direct gaze...

Adrian Barnard, Elliott School.

Entrant in a moustache competition. Obviously.

Remembrance Day, Carshalton.

Carshalton Straw Jack, beard, pipe...

Domfront again. He was English.

Dancer with the Guele de Loup troupe.

Saint Fraimbault, a pretty village...

One of our favourite places, having been taken there for the amazing August 15th fĂȘte by Pauline and Chris. Marvellous lake, flowers, buildings and people who stop you in the street, shake your hand and ask if you like their village. Really.

Also a lovely little restaurant with great food and friendly service. A walk round the lake, a stroll through the town and a very toothsome lunch.

Sounds like a tourist brochure, you say? Have a look at the pictures.

La vielle forge - August 15th demonstration.

Monsieur Hurdy-Gurdy
Four flowers - exceptional, and for a long time!

Watching it all happen - August 15th

More Hurdy Gurdy craziness

The Naughty Priest offering ladies cheap confessions on Mondays.

Cute.

Disturbing.

Very disturbing...

But it's really all about the flowers.

And a bit tiring

The lake. Obviously.

Excellent little restaurant. The crowd have just had a little post-Mass aperitif...

This house is a vendre. I want it.

No idea.

Not bad.

St Malo

Yesterday we visited the historic, impressive Brittany town of St Malo. It's a tourist trap nowadays, what Matt would call a target-rich environment for photographers.
This is what I took, using the Lumix compact. Easier to carry than the Nikon, but frustrating in the lack of control, especially over focus. In bright sunlight you need a viewfinder!

We walked, had lunch and visited the amazing bar La Java in the Rue Saint Barbe.

Impressive walls.

La Porte Sain Vincent.

Nice street furniture.

Almost every building a restaurant or bar.

Some interesting looking bars...

And beaches.

More romantic than useful?
The fish hall is modern, but uses almost medieval carpentry.

The quality of the woodwork is exceptional, and the fish are charming.

A surprising place...

Careful with that syringe, Matron...

And other faces

Edited in Snapseed for Instagram, an old pub.
Snapseed again - almost every building has its saints.

And another pretty face.
